Our Journey

The Problem

In the United States, there is a deeply concerning lack of post-acute rehabilitation services for patients after life-altering injuries and neurological events.

The average length of stay for inpatient rehabilitation has steadily declined, now at a shockingly low average of only 37 days. That means you are essentially given 37 days to begin learning how to live a new life after a Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke, limb loss, or another life-changing event.

Individuals are then discharged into a world of unknowns and barriers, facing overwhelming questions: “Where do I go for therapy now?” “How do I pay for that?” “Will I ever feel like myself again?”

Without adequate support, this can quickly spiral into a post-acute abyss of poor quality of life, physical complications, mounting bills, broken relationships, and frequent returns to the hospital.

The goal of Rise Neurorehab Institute is to strategically identify and eliminate barriers and gaps in rehabilitation healthcare and offer a real solution.

The Journey we’re on is not always the one we chose.

On March 9, 2020, a skiing accident changed the Corbett family’s life forever. At just 15, their son Devon sustained a severe traumatic brain injury while skiing in Colorado with friends. After several agonizing months of decreased consciousness, Devon beat the odds and emerged ready to recover. This kicked off an unending nationwide pursuit of post-acute rehabilitation services that best aligned with his progression through the different stages of brain injury recovery.

After exhausting all local services and encountering barrier after barrier, the Corbett family set out on a 14-month journey across three states, trialing different rehabilitation facilities in search of the support Devon needed. After returning home to Atlanta, the years that followed were defined by critical care, hard-won milestones, and a deeper understanding of what recovery truly demands.

As they navigated Devon’s journey, the Corbetts discovered gaps that too many families face after leaving the hospital: fragmented services, confusing handoffs, and severely limited access to long-term specialized rehabilitation. Brian and Melinda Corbett created the D1 Strong–The Journey Foundation to raise funds to build Rise Neurorehab Institute and close those gaps, so that everyone rebuilding their life after injury has the opportunity to reclaim it with dignity and support.

Caitlin Jones, Executive Director of Rise Neurorehab Institute, has been honored to be part of Devon’s journey for years as his physical therapist. She has celebrated countless milestones alongside Devon and remains committed to pushing him toward new goals every day.

As a Board-Certified Specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy with experience at leading rehabilitation institutions, Caitlin has worked first-hand with patients after life-altering injuries who have struggled to navigate the very barriers Rise was built to remove. She has witnessed the physical, emotional, and mental toll that lack of access to care takes on individuals and families, and she is passionate about ensuring everyone has a real path forward.

Combining the lived experience of the Corbett family with Caitlin’s clinical expertise, they are on a shared mission to empower individuals rebuilding their lives after injury, strengthen communities, and redefine what is possible in rehabilitation, starting right here in Atlanta.
